We came from an Arts background and have always been slightly baffled by the music industry. Visual things: films, hallucinations, graphic novels, binoculars and so on always seemed more interesting than indie stuff. Also, we found most music videos an appalling waste – trite, conservative and predictable – particularly in the days when they had huge budgets.
I once went to the launch party in New York for a new video by a certain very fat hip-hop star. At one point in the video he jumped into a swimming pool wearing a chinchilla coat which cost $100, 000 (and that is a lot of chinchillas). I asked why and was told: "to show he can afford to ruin it".
Most of our films have involved a lot fewer chinchillas but have been made with an awful lot of love and imagination by the talented people we collaborate with. Particularly Alex Budovsky, Alex De Campi, George Fort, Catherine Anyango, Don Brosnan. They have become the things many of our live shows are built around.
