(TED)X-RAY AUDIO – 2015

TED TALK - BOOK - LIVE EVENTS - EXHIBITION

Our X-Ray Audio project really took off this year – much more that I was expecting it to. It is the story of the Soviet bootleg records of forbidden music made on used x-rays during the cold war era. I have been researching it since I first came across one of the bootlegs in a St Petersburg flea market after a TRTW show a few years back.

Of course, as a musician, I was very interested in this story and I knew that it would appeal to vinyl junkies and cold war culture vultures too, but I have been very happily surprised at the way it has crossed over and seems to have a much wider appeal. In January, our exhibition at London’s The Horse Hospital got picked up three times by the BBC and there have been big pieces in The Guardian, The Moscow Times and on Vice.

Our live events with various musicians have proved immensely popular too – I am just back from New York where we held two and we have several more planned over the summer. And next month, almost unbelievably I am giving a TED talk on the project. Yikes.

The exhibition is currently at the Baltic Contemporary Arts Centre in Newcastle. It will go to Vivid Arts in Birmingham in November and then back to the Horse Hospital at the end of the year.

The X-Ray Audio book will be published by Strange Attractor in November
